As we have continued our export efforts, we have increasingly heard feedback from overseas buyers such as, 'We do not require large quantities at once (as it is a luxury item, it does not sell in bulk)', and 'We would like to purchase a wide variety of products in small lot'. To meet these requests, we have developed a online shop.
In our city, Shizuoka, tea has been produced for around 800 years, and today it is one of Japan's largest tea distribution centres. As a result, Shizuoka is known as the 'City of Tea'.
As much of the city's tea comes from the steep mountain slopes, it is also known as “mountain tea”. River mist gathers on the mountain tea fields, and the temperature changes drastically from dawn to dusk, resulting in supple, high-quality tea leaves. In order to accentuate the unique quality of these leaves, a shortened steaming time is used with much of the tea produced in the city, resulting in "asamushi cha" or lightly-steamed tea. Asamushi cha leaves become needle-shaped, and result in a clear tea, with an invigorating fragrance, and a rich umami flavor.
Shizuoka City Council has been working to expand green tea exports to countries such as Germany, Italy, France, the United States and Australia. Increasing export volumes not only allows people overseas to discover the delicious flavour and excellence of Shizuoka's tea, but also contributes to improving the incomes of tea farmers and traders, thereby helping to achieve sustainable tea production.
Although our tea is highly regarded in every country, it is by no means cheap. Furthermore, as all our teas are meticulously crafted, they are not suited to mass production. The tea produced in our city is positioned as a 'luxury item' or 'articles of taste'.
